The easiest way to answer this is by describing our ceremonies as a series of short dramas or plays using the practices of medieval builders, tools, stonemasons, and instruments of architecture as symbols of human endeavour and behaviour. These dramas teach moral lessons which reinforce in a Mason qualities of thoughtfulness, honesty and fairness.

We are not a secret society, nor a religion, nor a substitute for any religion. Most people have heard about the rolled up trouser leg, the blindfold and the secrets, they all have symbolic meanings. Bearing the knee is an act of reverence when kneeling in the presence of your God, the blindfold symbolises the passing from darkness to light. Masons do not go around exchanging secret handshakes or making secret signs to each other.

The most obvious answer as to why we do it is that we enjoy it and it is fun. But it also provides fellowship and offers opportunities to develop character and teamwork, and to contribute more to society. In these unsettled times Freemasonry provides stability, discipline and a sense of purpose in life.

After the meetings we usually have a dinner or festive board resembling similar meetings such as Rotary, Round Table, Lions and Probus Clubs, which provides an excellent opportunity for convivial conversation and companionship. We also have social evenings with dinner.
