The Malines Lodge No. 8740
Malines is a Belgium town. In 1914 'Staines Lodge No. 2536' commisioned an expert wood carver in Malines to make a Master's chair in memory of W Bro. Arther Carpenter.

When the Germans invaded his country the craftsman hid the parts of the chair. They were smuggled to Holland, and then to Staines, where the chair was assembled by a local firm of antique dealers, the head of which was a Mr. Arther Dommett, a noted Rotarian who had a shop in Staines. The firm has long since closed down and Mr. Dommett has now passed on.

The chair was dedicated by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. A. Burnett-Brown on the 28th September 1915.

In 1976, over 60 years later, Malines was chosen for the name of Lodge No.8740. The chair is still in use in the banqueting room at the Staines Masonic Centre.

The story of the chair was an inspiration to Brother Peter Davidge whose enthusiasm for the founding of a Lodge to commemorate these events, culminated in the consecration of Malines Lodge No. 8740 on the 24th March,1977 in Staines.
